Situated on one the main thoroughfares into Northampton on a former car dealership the store generated considerable interest from the local community being surrounded by residential properties. A public consultation meeting was set up for the local residents to meet with the design team and talk about their concerns. The highway consultant was able to communicate how the road design would not overload the existing road system, visual presentations helped to engage with the residents to define how the store would blend into its surroundings and the client was able to communicate their philosophy and how it would fit in with existing retailers along with plans for later phases of development.

This meeting provided valuable insight which assisted in the planning submissions and began the process of integrating the store into the community. West Northampton Development Corporation’s sustainability policy required a BREEAM commitment for the store with a rating of ‘good’. The assessment involved analysing the project through design, construction and completion to consider where improvements and efficiencies could be made.

Through an extensive investigation into each section of the BREEAM document we were able to achieve a ‘good’ standard with only a small increase in overall budget.
